I haven’t blogged about video games sense I shared my disappointment in the Tokyo Game Show. This is a real shame because Japan is pretty much the only place where gaming still has a powerful grip. I would rant about how Tokyo is littered with legit arcades with the latest games, but I’d rather start at the beginning.

Super Potato is a store in Akihabara that caters to the classic gamer. If you like retro games, you would be in heaven. I saw shit today that I never knew existed and a lot of stuff that I never thought I’d see again. 

The store occupies the third, fourth, and fifth floors of what honestly looks (and feels) like an apartment building. One of those apartment buildings that you would look at from the street and be like “Damn, I hope nobody lives there. I think thats where they invented crack.” Then you remember you’re in Tokyo, one of the safest cities in the world, so you enter.

The first thing you have to understand about Super Potato is that they don’t carry any games or consoles newer than the PS2. Again, retro game heaven.

You can find (almost) any retro game or console. Even everyone’s least favorite Donkey Kong Country game (DKC 3) in its original plastic. Like, 30 copies of it. Also, the original Donkey Kong too.

If you’re prone to impulse buying, you should probably stay away. You might find yourself standing in line with a neo geo pocket color and 10 Japanese games you’ve never heard of in your hands. Hopefully you, like me, will have realized your problem before you open your wallet.

But if you’re not into impulse buying and don’t want to buy a Sega Master System, what can you do? Well, you can play the in store Virtual Boy, SNES, NES, Atari, etc… OR, you could go the the 5th Floor.

The 5th Floor is a small, retro gaming arcade. 

They even have a throne made of game cartridges.

And the best part?

Coke, Canada Dry, and Hi-C in glass bottles. Hi-C in glass bottles!!
